Diani Beach

White sand, a protected reef and warm water — the natural second half of a Kenyan safari.

About Diani Beach

Diani runs for about ten kilometres south of Mombasa: white sand, casuarina trees and a reef roughly a kilometre offshore that keeps the water flat and swimmable.

It is the most developed stretch of the Kenyan coast, which cuts both ways. There is proper infrastructure — good restaurants, dive centres, a functioning airstrip with direct flights from the Mara — alongside quiet stretches if you choose the right property.

The colobus monkeys in the coastal forest are a small pleasure people rarely expect.

What you come for

  • Reef snorkelling and diving in Kisite-Mpunguti marine park
  • Dhow sailing at sunset from Funzi or Wasini
  • Kite surfing between June and September
  • Direct light aircraft link from the Maasai Mara — no backtracking to Nairobi

Wildlife you may see

  • Colobus monkey
  • Dolphin
  • Whale shark
  • Reef fish
  • Green turtle

Where to stay

  • Beachfront boutique hotels on the quieter southern stretch
  • Private villas with staff, for families and groups

Practical tips

  • Fly Mara to Diani directly. The overland alternative costs you two days.
  • Seaweed arrives seasonally on parts of the beach — property choice matters.
