Maasai Mara

Open grassland, the highest predator density in Kenya, and between July and October, the river crossings that draw people back for a lifetime.

About Maasai Mara

The Mara is the northern extension of the Serengeti, and it behaves like it. Short grass plains roll to the horizon, broken by the Siria escarpment in the west and threaded by the Mara and Talek rivers.

What sets it apart is density. Lion prides here are large and habituated; cheetah hunt in the open where you can actually watch them work; leopard sit in the riverine fig trees along the Talek. You are rarely searching for very long.

The conservancies bordering the reserve — Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Mara North — are where we send most guests. Vehicle numbers are capped, night drives and walking are permitted, and the wildlife is every bit as good.

What you come for

  • River crossings on the Mara and Talek between July and October
  • Hot air balloon at first light, landing to breakfast on the plains
  • Conservancy game drives with capped vehicle numbers and night driving
  • Walking safaris with Maasai guides in the private conservancies

Wildlife you may see

  • Lion
  • Leopard
  • Cheetah
  • Elephant
  • Buffalo
  • Black rhino
  • Wildebeest
  • Topi
  • Spotted hyena

Where to stay

  • Classic tented camps along the Talek and Mara rivers, in the reserve itself
  • Conservancy camps north of the reserve — quieter, with exclusive traversing rights
  • Small owner-run houses for families or groups taking a whole property

Practical tips

  • Fly rather than drive. Nairobi to the Mara airstrips is 45 minutes against five hours of rough road.
  • Mornings are genuinely cold at 1,600m. Bring a fleece even in August.
  • Conservancy fees are higher but buy you far fewer vehicles at a sighting.
