Maasai Mara vs Amboseli: Which Should You Choose?
They are both excellent and they are not remotely alike. One is about predators on open grassland; the other is about elephants beneath a mountain.
This is the most common question we are asked, and the honest answer is that most people with seven nights or more should do both. But if you must choose, here is how they differ.
Choose the Maasai Mara for predators
The Mara has the highest big cat density in Kenya and terrain that lets you watch them work. Cheetah hunt in the open. Lion prides are large and unbothered by vehicles. Leopard sit in riverine trees where you can actually see them.
It is also the only place in Kenya where the migration happens, between roughly July and October.
Choose Amboseli for elephants and the mountain
Amboseli's elephants are the best-studied in the world and include genuine big tuskers — bulls with ivory reaching the ground, a sight that has become rare across Africa.
And there is Kilimanjaro. On a clear dawn, elephants crossing the pans with the mountain behind them is the defining image of East African travel. Bear in mind the mountain is usually cloud-covered by mid-morning.
Practical differences
- Size. The Mara ecosystem is vast; Amboseli is small and flat, so you cover it quickly.
- Time needed. Amboseli works well in three nights. The Mara rewards four or more.
- Access. Both fly easily from Nairobi. Amboseli is also a reasonable road transfer; the Mara is not.
- Cost. Amboseli is generally cheaper, particularly in peak season.
- Crowds. The Mara reserve gets busy in August. Amboseli rarely feels crowded.
If you can only pick one
First safari, want to see as much as possible: the Mara. Photographer, elephant enthusiast, or short on time: Amboseli.
With ten nights, the better question is not which one, but what to add — Samburu for northern species, Laikipia for walking and rhino, or the coast to finish.
